What's In a Name?

The name Edge Community communicates a philosophy of ministry, not physical structure or denominational affiliation.

The Edge is that point where we're under control, yet on the brink of chaos (hence the term "edge of chaos"--surfing is a great example of this).

In Biblical terms, this means living by God's guidelines for orderly church services, wise planning, etc, while being open to the leading of the Spirit in accordance with His Word.

Sometimes, following
tradition is like
crossing a stream,
then continuing to
carry the canoe on
your back.

Churches on the edge may be described as chaordic (a word invented by author Dee Hock)--orderly, but very dynamic, because we must change constantly in order to effectively present Christ to a changing world. A chaordic church is a dynamic and self-organizing community whose members are empowered to use their spiritual gifts as intended.

"Community" refers to the fact that a local "church" is simply a community of believers. We live in a time when the word "church" has negative connotations to some--yet "community" is something we all understand and desire. It speaks of unified beliefs, common goals, and vital human relationships... the underpinnings of a great movement of God.

Interesting Quotes:

from Leonard Sweet's "Soul Tsunami"

The church is by its very definition a chaordic organism – an organic, free-form community driven by mission and responsive to its indigenous environments.

"The bend of the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to make the curve."

from Erwin McManus' "Unstoppable Force"

The church needs to create a healthy culture where people can fulfill their God-given purpose.
